Trace is the capture hardware we are building in the open: a handheld scanning stick that fuses 360° lidar, RGB-D vision, and RTK positioning — and signs every capture in silicon before it leaves the device. It is in engineering validation now, and every design decision on it is published below.

Three decisions that define Trace
Hardware choices are easy to hide behind spec sheets. These three shape everything else about the device.
Signed at capture, in silicon
A dedicated secure element signs data at the moment of capture with Ed25519 — the only capture-grade SE that supports it, chosen after disqualifying every alternative. Provenance starts in hardware, not in software later.
One clock for every sensor
The RTK receiver disciplines the lidar over a dedicated PPS/NMEA fan-out with buffered, independent branches. Where a sensor physically cannot accept sync — our fused camera cannot — we say so and bound the error honestly.
Geometry that is solved, not styled
The antenna mast height is the closed-form solution of the lidar’s upper field-of-view cone — asserted in code on every build, so no future revision can silently shadow the scan. The same is true of every keep-out on the stick.
